TASTING NOTES(W L Weller Single Barrel)

The scent of Weller Single Barrel is cherry and mint, fading to vanilla. On the palate, caramel and baking spices with undertones of cocoa erupt, with a finish of cinnamon, coffee, and a hint of pepper.

Buffalo Trace’s Weller Single Barrel is the company’s first permanent addition to the Weller brand range since Full Proof in 2019. According to the press release, the firm recognizes a plethora of possibilities for their rye bourbons (e.g., Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Stagg Jr., George T. Stagg, and E.H. Taylor, Jr.) and was eager to further broaden their wheated bourbon options.

Buffalo Trace had been planning a Weller Single Barrel release for some time and was finally able to bring it to market in 2020. Weller Single Barrel joins the Weller lineup, which also includes Weller Special Reserve, Weller Antique 107, Weller 12 Year, Weller Full Proof, Weller Craft Your Perfect Bourbon (CYPB), and William Larue Weller from the company’s Antique Collection(W L Weller Single Barrel).

NOSE(W L Weller Single Barrel)

The perfume of luscious summer fruits is immediately enticing. Potent strawberries with layers of cherry, raspberry, and lemon are an eye-catching combination for any bourbon, let alone one bearing the name “Weller” on the label. Beyond this, smells of rich vanilla and old oak bolster its overall effectiveness. The nose works in every manner; it’s sweet, fruity, rich, and strong, culminating in a scent you’ll appreciate.

palate

Much of the summer fruits remain on the palate, although they are subdued and less sweet in comparison. That’s probably a good thing, because the nose suggested this could taste sickly sweet. It instead has a flavor profile that is characterized by a pronounced cherry flavour(W L Weller Single Barrel). Cinnamon and raspberry blend together, carrying much of the palate to the finish. There’s a lot to like and enjoy, but nothing to truly adore(W L Weller Single Barrel).

finish

The bourbon’s dryness emerges as the sweetness of the palate disappears. The bourbon becomes much more focused as oak and leather take over. Additional notes of chestnut, plum, and deep cherry emerge, in keeping with the finish’s style. It works, but it lacks the WOW(W L Weller Single Barrel) effect of its nose and, more broadly, the brand as a whole. The aftertaste is much more typical and, in my opinion, a dull tasting experience overall.

uniqueness

Weller has never stood out for its distinctiveness in any of its manifestations. It’s a wheated bourbon in the classic style, with only a few small variations among its many incarnations. It’s good at what it does and has, for the most part, kept in its lane. Weller Single Barrel, its most recent version, is stylistically identical to Weller 12 Year, with a few small variances.

The first is its extremely fruity scent when compared to other Weller releases and even to Buffalo Trace’s wider range of bourbons.

The tongue maintains the characteristic Weller flavor profile(W L Weller Single Barrel), but the finish is slightly more dry and oaky, although not entirely so. It also has a proof that is in the midst of Weller’s current lineup, with Special Reserve and 12 Year at 90, CYPB at 95, Antique 107 at 107, and Full Proof at 114.

With most major brands producing a single barrel version of their brands, Weller was a remarkable holdout in this market for so long. It felt like an eternity for a basic non-pick Weller single barrel to happen, either due to its pedigree or Buffalo Trace reserving single barrels for private selections for stores and groups. Now that it has, it is exactly what you’d expect it to be, if not a bit less so. It sticks to a typical bourbon style and gives little else to genuinely stand out.
