Blanton’s Gold
Blanton’s Gold, Elmer T. Lee made the world’s first single barrel bourbon in 1984. Colonel Albert B. Blanton, former distillery president, inspired the name. Colonel Blanton would occasionally handpick a ‘honey barrel’ from the center of Warehouse H to enjoy with others, Elmer recalled. The Blanton’s brand was formed several years later. Blanton’s Single Barrel is now regarded as one of the most prestigious and award-winning bourbons on the market(Blanton’s Gold). Following the Original 93 proof, the Gold Edition was made. This 103 proof Blanton’s Gold is extremely scarce, but it is a favorite among sophisticated bourbon connoisseurs.
TASTE NOTES(Blanton’s Gold)
On the nose, there are hints of spicy rye and tobacco, followed by caramel and honey, dark fruit and citrus flavors. The taste has the same complex aroma as the nose, with rye, tobacco, and honey. Oak and vanilla help to create a lengthy and harmonious finish(Blanton’s Gold).
NOSE In a word, delicious. The flavors of raisins, dried fruit, citrus, and fresh hay stand out. This higher proof version of Blanton’s has a somewhat stronger alcohol aroma on the nose than the Original Single Barrel Blanton’s, but it still tastes great and refined. It’s astonishing how much a 10 proof point increase makes in rounding out a fuller bodied nose.
palate
The Gold Edition’s palate has a superb mouthfeel and a mild flavor profile. It’s drier than I expected given on my previous experiences with Blanton’s bottles, with notes of vanilla, honey, caramel, tobacco, dried fruit, and pepper. The Gold Edition’s additional proof is most obvious in its pepper(Blanton’s Gold) profile, which begins as a slight spicy burn on the back end of the palate then roars up in the finish.
finish
This strong finish is defined by a lingering spiciness. With each sip, a delicious gradual burn engulfs your mouth and builds up heat as it slowly travels down your throat. There are tastes of delicate rye, burnt aged wood, leather, and honey within that burn. A dry heat lingers in your mouth for an extended period of time, extending the finish. I was able to “chew” on this finish for several minutes and thoroughly enjoy its flavor characteristics(Blanton’s Gold).

Blanton’s Gold Edition is only available in a few non-US markets. Blanton’s Gold Edition is 10 proof points higher than Blanton’s Original Single Barrel, which is sold in the United States at 93 proof.
If you like Blanton’s Original Single Barrel, this is one of two chances to experience(blanton’s gold label) the distillery’s higher proofed version, the other being Blanton’s Straight from the Barrel. The Gold Edition allows you to experience Blanton’s at a proof that provides full flavor without overloading you with alcohol. It’s fascinating to observe what a small increase in proof can accomplish to bring out the flavor profile of the Blanton’s brand. It’s a shame they make consumers go out of their way(Blanton’s Gold) to experience it, because the bolder flavor profile is more well-rounded than what you’ll get in other Buffalo Trace single barrel products right now.
